The current setup is:
Station 1 – Loading: Lenses are received backside down on the incoming shuttle and are fed automatically into the coating machine. For front side coating, the mechanical grippers at the loading station will flip the lens before transfer to a suction cup on the transport arm.
Station 2 – Cleaning: The lens is rotated as a nozzle of very high pressure DI water traverses the surface of the lens. A diverter valve interrupts the flow of high pressure DI water to the nozzle at a timed interval, commensurate with the lens diameter, entered by the operator via key pad.
Station 3 – Drying: The lens is rotated as a nozzle of medical grade compressed air traverses the surface of the lens.
Station 4 – Primer Coating: The lens is rotated as a nozzle traverses the surface of the lens. Coating application is based upon a timed dispense. This station, in-conjunction with stations 5 & 6, are operated only when a primer coat is required.
Note: Stations 2, 3 & 4 have a common spin driver and a common nozzle actuator. Spin speed is variable.
Station 5 – Primer Flashing: The coating is smoothed and the solvents, if present, are allowed to evaporate in the flashing chamber Solvent vapors, if any, are drawn out of the machine from below this station. An IR heater supplements this operation
Station 6 – Primer UV Curing: After the lens is indexed over a fixed UV lamp, a shutter opens and the lens is rotated at slow speed. The lamp area is enclosed with quartz glass, to isolate the coated lens from the lamp cooling air stream.
Station 7 – Coating: Once the lens has been cleaned and dried, and optionally primed, it is indexed into the spin coating chamber. Coating application is based upon a timed dispense. Spin speed is variable.
Station 8 – Flashing: The coating is smoothed and the solvents, if present, are allowed to evaporate in the flashing chamber Solvent vapors, if any, are drawn out of the machine from below this station. An IR heater supplements this operation. Spin speed is variable.
Station 9 – UV Curing: After the lens is indexed over the Fusion UV curing lamp, a shutter opens and the lamp moves at a programmable speed past the lens, up to a 4 inch stroke. The shutter closes and the lamp returns to the home position. The lamp area is enclosed with quartz glass, to isolate the coated lens from the lamp cooling air stream. This station is removable and replaceable by a 708 watt IR heater with a rotating spindle, driven by the same driver as stations 10 & 11.
Station 10 – IR Curing: A 708 watt IR heater supplements curing for thermal coatings, as the lens is rotated.
Station 11 – IR Curing: A 708 watt IR heater supplements curing for thermal coatings, as the lens is rotated.
Station 12 – Unloading: The lens is moved to the unloading station where the suction cup releases the lens into a mechanical gripper mounted on a rotary actuator. After front side coating, the lens is flipped so it is placed backside down onto the exit conveyor/shuttle.
